The recent lack of updates and my continuing absence have pushed me to write this. I'm writing this with the intention of starting a discussion in the comments for this blog, so please take the time to read it all, and I would love to hear your thoughts.
So IC hasn't updated since September. This happened last year around this time, too. University has taken all my time away from IC, like it did last year. Even when I do get the chance to work on the site, I'm rushing to get something done in time. Whether it is or not, my work feels sloppy and rushed. I'm not writing this to complain, I'm writing this because I want to change this.
Of course, there will be times that I can go back to working on IC, during vacations or holidays, but even then, family and other factors prevent me from really sitting down and focusing on IC as much as I would like to. And even then, I wouldn't like to have IC be something that sporadically lives and dies down again or something that I can only focus on every now and then.
Obviously, this can't go on anymore. I could keep at this for years (I would if I chose to), but it would be a losing battle, simply because there are things going on in my life that come before IC.
Don't get me wrong, I would love to be able to keep working on IC as I had for all these years. I have so many plans and ideas in my head and on paper for what I would still like to see for IC, in what directions I would like to take it. The "re-launch" over this past summer was a step towards those ideas.
I definitely don't regret it, if that's what you're thinking. This site started waaaay back in 2006 as a fan site, restarted in 2008 as a web-design enthusiast's community, and has changed in so many ways since. The site was in constant transformation. Members came and went with time. Every member brought something special to the community when they came and took a piece with them when they left. This site has affected so many people in so many different ways from so many different places. I've learned so much from running IC and meeting everyone that would come and go over the years. I'm not sure if many webmasters could say the same. I'm truly blessed for being able to serve everyone throughout the years.
This past summer was one of the best times I had in a long time working on IC. Part of it was the near-impossible goals I set (updates every day), part of it was rebuilding the site closer towards my vision, but most of it was because it gave the community new life and activity I wasn't able to see during university last year.
I hate to leave projects incomplete, especially the switch to Drupal, which still feels like it was just getting started. But that's the flaw of the perfectionist, nothing will ever be "finished," and he or she will miss out on other opportunities unless he or she accepts imperfection and moves on. I've been trying to avoid this for a long time now, but perhaps it's time for me to move on from IceCaves.net.
Not necessarily move on from the Internet (gasp), but really only IC. I don't know if I'm letting anyone down or not. Mostly because what made IC special was that its community wasn't completely dependent on the website itself. The community stayed connected through Twitter, Gmail chat, and personal blogs. If IC were to die (as it currently seems to have), then the community continues to live on. It might not have the same name (or awesome website for that matter), but it won't be completely disbanded either.
So is IC closing? Most likely. It's certainly possible for someone else to keep it up and running especially now that we've gone to Drupal, but perhaps the better option would be to close it. There would be a lot of complications and conflicting expectations if the site were to simply transfer over to someone else's hands. If IC were to continue, I feel like it would have to be from scratch and under a different name. There should be no confusion between my vision for a community and someone else's.
But what do you think? I know a lot of you might be sad to see IC go (if not, that's ok, haha). After all, we have been around for what feels like forever. I would like to know what you think, if you think IC could live on without me (consequently someone else instead), and/or any ideas you might have for keeping the community together without IC.

This makes me really sad. I think that we should implement some of the ideas we've come up with, like the weekly updates, and you should wait, Haily, if you're really going to leave until we can run IC on our own. If you go through with this and really do leave, DO NOT shut IC down. I know that you do not want your vision obscured by the vision of the community, but I believe that the community is what will keep IC alive. A name change is not a good idea, and it will confuse members and mess up all the work for ranking names and logo designs and other things unique to IceCaves. Please reconsider, and keep all of us in mind in your decision.
Yay, Anna!

I was at my boyfriend's house when I read this and he started getting worried and asking what was up because I looked genuinely upset. I don't know if that says more about how great IC is or how sad I am.
I will come back to this with a more thought-out comment at some point...I've had a hectic couple of days and I'm not capable of much thought at the moment, I'm afraid. I just wanted to be clear that I wasn't ignoring this topic, since, y'know, it's obviously kind of important.
Oh look, some blatant advertising. I should stop this. But you know you want to click this. You do. If you're denying it then you're lying to yourself.
It's definitely possible to keep IC running with my role as diminished from what it is now. The move to Drupal still isn't finished and there are things I would like to add (weekly updates, some ideas only the staff knows about). But unfortunately as it stands, I won't be able to get started on adding these changes until mid/late December. Would you guys be willing to wait until then? The reason I wrote this was because I'm tired of letting people/myself down when I can't find the time to focus on IC. I'm always talking about these great ideas I have for the site, but I just can't seem to implement them in time. Frankly the way I see it, there's no difference between the slow activity we have right now and the no activity of closing the site. But perhaps we can change this without me, but again, a lot of these changes (like a competition system) won't be until winter break for me.
Of course, I can give FTP access to Thomas or something. Just a random thought.
Of course we'd all be sad to see IC go, I think I'm pretty correct to assume that. It would be great for IC to stay up, and personally, I'd be happy to wait till December time for you to work on the switch to Drupal and making IC more dependent on the staff. Like you said, the way IC is now is really no different to closing it so you could just close it till December or just leave it like it is- "half dead". If you don't feel comfortable just leaving IC as is until December, there's always the choice of utilizing the dreaded hiatus notice.
Also I'm glad you enjoyed your daily update challenge. :)

I also liked the title to this post. "The State of IC" - "The State of the Union". I dunno if you were channeling a bit of that here.

I don't wanna see IC close down. :( Can I help you with some updates like bringing back userbars, website layouts or what about that stay connected page? Will you be able to at least start the web awards?
Perhaps have another daily update challenge during the 3 weeks I'll be available? haha, we'll see. The aim will be to get the site set up to not have another half-dead / hiatus period again before my time is up, so I would decided whether to do that or not depending on if I think daily updates would help me with that.
Haha I also thought of government-y things from the title, but not "State of the Union" :P
As for the web awards, I don't think so. There's still a lot of things closer to our foundation that should be finished first. And it might be possible for you to bring back userbars and other old content, but I haven't set up the categories yet so if you can't figure out how to add the new custom content types in Drupal then it's ok. But if you can figure it out, then sure, I'll send you the files and old database entries and see what you can do with them.
You're always busy during the winter break but sure, try updating everyday for 3 weeks.
I do sort of understand the content type page so I can try adding userbars and/or website layouts.
Oh I forgot to mention that this break I'll actually have a lot more time than last year. (I won't be traveling.) And well I'm liking Jenny's hiatus idea a lot. Because I would love to have IC keep running. I'll see what I can get done this winter. And until then, my next few weeks will be really hectic, so I wouldn't be able to do anything for IC.
Sorry for bumming you out with talk about closing but it's something that's been on my mind for a while. If I can't get a lot started this winter then I would seriously think it over again. But for now, I guess IC will continue to be half-dead until mid/late December.
Okay so if you send me all the userbar images and website layout images then I can probably add website layouts this week and the userbars can be added the following week. I will probably need to do a bit of research for the userbars because you still want all of them to dispaly on one page with categories/tags, right? That will probably be similar to how you display stock photos and color schemes on the page here.
Oh and I have saved all the images for the web layouts that didn't have their images uploaded to the site so all I need are the images for the layouts that did have their images uploaded.
Its great to see us discussing this. I finally understand what you mean by Uni keeps you SO busy! i'd love to see IC stay online, coz it means that I can always come online and talk to you lovely people :)
I think keeping the site open, but giving thomas more room to work and upload stuff will definitely help. if we manage to get a lot of the foundational stuff done, we might even be able to do the web awards, which is a GREAT way to get people interested in the site again...

at least you're doing a better job than livio :P
the last like 6 "weekly" updates have been by other members.
getting other people to help would be good.
since livio is not doing very well, you could have other staff members do update and stuff?
if you shut down, livio can make fun of you.
